Practicing the Basic Neurocellular Patterns (3:39)

The Basic Neurocellular Patterns (BNP) were developed by Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen as an integral part of the Body-Mind Centering® approach to somatic movement education. This video on the BNP is designed to accompany Bonnie's book, Basic Neurocellular Patterns: Embodying Developmental Movement. It can also be useful for people who have studied the BNP in a course at a School for Body-Mind Centering® licensed training program, or through study of the BNP with Bonnie or with a professional member of the Body-Mind Centering Association.

Embryonic Breathing

An Introduction to Embryonic Breathing: A Body-Mind Centering® Approach (32:28)

When I was very ill 20 years ago, I discovered a way to breathe different from anyway I had ever breathed before. It was a breathing through the fluid rather than a breathing through the air. At first it was difficult and required minimal effort but concentrated focus. I could breathe this way for only a few moments before I would gasp for breath and I would return to my regular breathing. It felt primordial, perhaps even before taking my first breath of air through my lungs at birth. Upon practicing this breathing, my state of health improved phenomenally. In sharing it with others, many people have also experienced the depth of this breathing which can sometimes feel like we are not breathing. The name that arose for this breathing is embryonic breathing. It eventually became more than a practice - it became the foundation for the way I breathe all the time. This video is an introduction to embryonic breathing. I share my story and experience with embryonic breathing, the anatomy of embryonic breathing, and a somatization to guide you through your own exploration of embryonic breathing.

Heart–Brain Connection through Embodying Our Embryological Development (8:08)

Feel how your brain follows your heart and brings your mouth [with it]. Your brain, your heart, and your mouth are one unit. When we say, ‘speak from your heart’, we’re going back to the embryology because that’s where our heart joined. The right and left sides joined in front of our mouth. I’m very interested in embryological development because it is the embodiment of space versus the embodiment of structure. Through our embryological history, we are in a sequence of spaces. But we don’t just inhabit space; we create space. Exploring your embryological development can be a powerful embodiment practice. We each grew ourselves. You grew yourself. Going back to the earliest moments can help guide us through our process of being a physical being, as well as the consciousness of this process.
